West Ham United have joined Arsenal in the race to sign William Carvalho.

Carvalho was linked with a move to the Emirates last month when reports in Portugal claimed Wenger was considering the 25 year old as an option to strengthen our midfield. However, those links have since died down, instead the club is now focusing on signing Nice’s Jean-Michel Seri.

While a deal for Seri hasn’t made any progress, it is widely believed that Carvalho has been penciled down as an alternative. If that’s is the case, Arsenal may not have the chance to sign the Portuguese after West Ham joined the race for his signature.

According to various reports, West Ham have made a €30m bid for Carvalho, although the bid was rejected by Sporting.

The Portuguese club are demanding the Hammers activate the €40m release clause in his contract but West Ham doesn’t believe the player is worth that much.

According to Goal, representatives of the East London club have now flown to Lisbon to try strike an agreement with Sporting.

Carvalho was heavily linked with Arsenal as well as Manchester United earlier in the transfer window but West Ham are now confident of signing the midfielder.

Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has an history of being tough in negotiations and getting the best deals for his top talents, meaning West Ham and other suitors face a tough task of convincing him to sell Carvalho lesser than his clause.

Arsenal had a bid in the region of £25m rejected for Carvalho two summers again and haven’t made a concrete bid since then, despite following the midfielder’s progress closely, obviously because of Sporting’s reluctance to negotiate a lesser fee.
