With the recent thaw in the Cavani exit rumours from the Parc des Princes this January, Arsenal and Liverpool have adjusted their fishing nets but not moving waters, with the Uruguayan’s teammate Ezequiel Lavezzi now the target.
Indeed, it is reported that Brendan Rodgers is the one who currently leads the race for Lavezzi, as he continues to seek the main replacement for Luis Suarez. Rodgers had been as interested as we were on Cavani but with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi declaring that the Matador would not be sold in the next window, having seemingly discovered his form with the only goal of the game in the Champions League win yesterday, attention has shifted to his former Napoli teammate.
There are reports that while PSG would do all to keep Cavani, they are not so keen on keeping Lavezzi, with the January window a likely date to ship him off to any interested buyers. Wenger has been very expressive of his desire to have Cavani but seeing he cannot now have him, he may as well battle Rodgers for Lavezzi’s signature.
The 29-year-old who currently earns around €80,000-a-week could see himself earn an increased wage should he decide to make the switch to English football, joining other top South American stars currently enjoying bigger paydays. With very good examples being Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao who have since their summer switch smiled to the bank.
Wenger is expected to receive a £20m + transfer purse to use in the winter and after spending on any one defender, some balance could still be available to transact a transfer for a player in some other position where much reinforcement is needed. While the defensive should be top priority, we still need upliftment in the attack as we have had to rely too heavily and solely on Danny Welbeck.
Lavezzi will not come in cheap given the immensity of his experience at the top level with both Napoli and PSG over the years. He’s been a Championnat winner for two years now, which saw him get much deserved attention from Alejandro Sabella in the World Cup for the Argentine team.
Lavezzi’s energy and pace have not exactly waned despite him now being 29. He was one of the most sought after forwards, with Cavani, during his five seasons at Napoli. It is easy to forget how highly rated he had been some years ago, having been part of the Argentina’s Olympic team who won gold at Beijing – a team that featured both Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria.
Liverpool are set to splash about £30m on Lavezzi if they get a go ahead that he’s surely for sale. Atletico Madrid are said to also be interested. What do you reckon, Arsene?
