With just a little over a week to the official opening of the winter transfer window business, many clubs have already started making advanced moves to secure players being targeted to strength their teams.
Now, Arsenal are closing in on a surprise move for Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper, Kevin Trapp, according to the Mirror.
The 24-year old German is thought to be on the Gunners radar as Wenger remains on the lookout for options in every area of the pitch to stir up competition and contention for places. Arsenal’s progress this season has been stalled by injuries in all positions, with both Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina once sidelined at the same time this season due to injuries. Szczesny has continued to be the Number 1, while Ospina has made a recent return to the team following his knee injury.
Speculations of all sorts are going over the roof on whom and what kind of players we will be looking at this January. We inevitably need defenders, we should make moves for midfielders and it may not be entirely wasteful to land a Dybala.
Surely, then, we aren’t expecting a new goalkeeper to come through in the coming transfer window, given we had signed David Ospina as a dependable second choice after the World Cup. Ospina’s deputy, Emi Martinez, has even had the luxury of being in the team long enough to endear himself to us, while highly-rated teenage goalie Matt Macey has made the bench in Champions League games.
Not only do we not need a goalkeeper now, but we certainly would be no better with one who is, at the moment, injured. Trapp has not played competitive football since the 23rd of September which was only his 5th BundesLiga game of the season. It wouldn’t make sense for us to dabble into such waters of uncertainty for a player we do not have an absolute, desperate need for. Arsenal did sign Emiliano Viviano from Fiorentina last season but he ended up not making a single first team appearance, even if he did join in the open-top bus parade for the FA Cup victory.
It could just be bluff from the rumour mill as Wenger would want to make maximal use of the £20m that is reported will be his kitty for the transfer window. A goalkeeper is part of the defence but strength is needed more in the zone just in front of him. Maybe Szczesny still has issues but he is one of the best in the League and can only get better being just 24. Besides, he has good competition in Ospina and Martinez already.
Going for an injured goalkeeper? It’s a trap we must skip.
