We did think that Gabriel would be the end of the business to be done in this window but there could infact be a third with reports of a possible bid to be made by Arsenal for unsettled Atletico Madrid star, Mario Mandzukic.
The Express reports that Arsenal could make a last ditch £26m move to secure the services of the former Wolsburg man, with City also interested.
Torres has shed the cloak of career dip he got clothed with at Stamford Bridge and has become both Diego Simeone’s and the club fans’ favourite striker, scoring a memorable brace on his debut to knock Real Madrid out of the Copa Del Rey, and this has gradually led to reports in Spain about a possibility that Atletico could listen to offers for Mandzukic even in the coming days.
The 28-year old only just signed from Bayern last summer, snubbing what was thought to be significant interest from Arsenal, and had looked good value for money scoring, 16 goals in 28 appearances so far. However, Atletico could be willing to accept a £26m fee from any club who indicate interest in him as they look to the rejuvenated El Nino to rekindle the form that made him captain at the Calderon, before moving to Liverpool in 2008. They have already shown they are willing to let a player go this window by loaning Alessio Cerci to Milan, despite having only just signed him from Torino last summer.
Mandzukic had always been linked with Arsenal especially from when Pep Guardiola became in-charge at Bayern Munich. He was finally sold to Atletico this season when the BundesLiga Champions took Lewandowski from Dortmund but that was not before he had played a part in a sensational treble with Jupp Heynckes in the 2012/2013 season, lifting the Champions League in Wembley. He could now be coming to London for a second move within a year if Arsenal dim it fit to pursue him.
Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck are Arsene Wenger’s main strikers at the moment and while three other forwards had to be shipped out on loan due to the competition in the squad, Wenger might still add to the quality and competition by landing a top class center forward like Mandzukic. Though he did say making another buy looked unlikely, he has not entirely ruled out any possibilities.
Don’t know if Manduzkic is not all too similar to Giroud, but his goal records is far better than the Frenchman’s and if he is signed, it will definitely bring out the best in the other player with whom he will be competing. What that would spell for Chuba Akpom, though, may not translate to him not joining one of the clubs reportedly offering a pre-contract.
