Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has warned Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that he needs to improve and battle it out with Alex Iwobi for a place in the starting xi or risk his Arsenal career.

Iwobi has become a key first team player this season despite making his senior debut just over a year ago.

Chamberlain who has spent five years at the Emirates has fallen behind the Nigerian and has had to settle for a place on the bench. Wright believes he must step up and challenge Iwobi for the first team spot if he wants to become relevant at Arsenal.

Wright also believes Chamberlain could find it difficult at Arsenal depending on our form in the coming months.

“Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a player with an unbelievable amount of ability,” Wright told BBC Radio Five Live’s 606 show, as quoted by Sports Review.

“Alex Iwobi has come in and overtaken him. What you want to see is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain getting into the team and have a real go at trying to cement a place in Arsene Wenger’s side.

“I can feel that Oxlade-Chamberlain is going to find it hard in the next few weeks depending on how Arsenal do.”

Chamberlain suffered criticism last season due to a poor campaign and this year could be a make or break campaign for him. Considering he has less than two years left in his contract, he would definitely need to step up his game this season if he wants to remain at the club for long.

The winger who joined us from Southampton for almost £16m in 2011 has scored one goal and provided one assist in nine Premier League games this season.
