Arsenal are reportedly preparing a move to sign Borussia Dortmund ace Sokratis Papastathopoulos in the summer transfer window.
Papastathopoulos, 29, has made 192 appearances for Dortmund since joining the club back in 2013 but the defender is expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
The Greek international has previously been linked with a move England and the Premier League’s elite could battle it out for his signature ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsene Wenger is keeping close tabs on Papastathopoulos as he scours the market for defensive reinforcements.
The centre-back is out of contract in the summer of 2019 and Dortmund are ready to listen to offers from potential suitors.
Wenger is on the hunt for Per Mertesacker’s long-term replacement in north London, with the German set to become Arsenal’s academy manager in the summer.
‘This is the start of an exciting new chapter for me and I am delighted that I will be able to stay part of the Arsenal family,’ Mertesacker said last July.
‘This season I will remain fully focused on my job with the team and am looking forward to a successful last season on the pitch.
‘After that, I look forward to the exciting challenge of helping produce young players good enough to play for the Arsenal first team.’
