19-year-old goalkeeper Alban Lafont is set to leave Toulouse this summer, according to the French media, with Arsenal joining four other clubs in showing an interest.
L’Equipe (via GFFN) report that Lafont is planning a summer move. Napoli are the leading candidate for his signature, but they’re only willing to spend €10m (£8.76m) plus bonuses, which doesn’t meet Toulouse’s asking price.
AS Roma, worried about losing current first-choice Alisson over the summer, also join Arsenal in the race. Newcastle and Watford are the other two clubs following the goalkeeper, but they haven’t made any moves just yet.
In late February, Lafont admitted he likes Arsenal, and watched the club’s matches since he was young. Arsene Wenger’s side could therefore have the edge in negotiations with the player himself.
If the highest bid so far is only around £8.76m, they wouldn’t have to break the bank to match it.
The question is whether Arsenal are willing to take a risk on a young keeper. There’s no doubt the club need to bring someone in, as David Ospina and Petr Cech haven’t looked convincing at all this campaign. Still pinning all their hopes on a 19-year-old could backfire just as badly.
Perhaps Arsenal should think about bringing in Lafont as well as someone with a bit more game-time at the top level.
