Football pundit Tony Cascarino believes Petr Cech will not finish the season as Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper.

The Czech Republic veteran had shaky moments in our opening game of the season against Leicester City and Cascarino is one of those who believe those moments are signs that Cech is past his best.

The pundit believes Cech is now playing on his reputation not necessarily because he still is a world class goalkeeeper.

He has now backed Wenger to sign a successor in the January transfer window because he doesn’t think Ospina has what it takes to displace Cech as the club’s no. 1.

I’m not sure that Petr Cech will be No 1 at Arsenal come the end of season,” Cascarino wrote in the Times via the Express.

“The 35-year-old is nowhere near the level he was and rather than using his experience to compensate for fading ability he looks increasingly shaky in goal.

“He’s playing on reputation but I’m not sure David Ospina is good enough to replace him.

“If this becomes a problem Arsene Wenger may have to look at buying a goalkeeper in January.’

One can’t really blame Cascarino for stating his opinion but he isn’t entirely correct, as Cech is still world class. It is true that he is making far too much errors these days, it didn’t just start happening, silly errors were part of Cech’s game last season, which led to reports linking us with the likes of Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford.

Despite this, I don’t expect a new goalkeeeper to arrive at the Emirates before next summer, no matter what happens. Cech will have more shaky moments as the season progresses but I am confident we will be able to go through the season with our current options.
