The Los Blancos have nicked a few of the players linked to Arsenal in this window, Lucas Silva and Martin Odegaard, but may want to show some love by offering one of their players as compensation as the Mirror.
Portuguese defender, Fabio Coentrao, has rarely been used in the team this season and Madrid want to offload him to any club who would be willing to part with ‘just’ £25m. Injuries and a rise in general contributions to the attack from Marcelo has seen Coentrao maintain his place on the bench but considering the promise he had shown in 2010 before moving to Madrid, there is still as much in him to offer somewhere else if he plays regularly.
The reports are that Madrid are willing to speak to any English clubs who would be willing to take him off their books and Arsenal has been linked with him in the past, even before the move to the Bernabeu after the World Cup in South Africa. His name was also frequently in the fray leading up to this window as one of those who could be signed by Wenger to fill the void in defence, giving that Nacho Monreal was becoming more or less a center half.
That does not seem like it would happen now as the Arsenal team looks a bit more balanced than it was in the summer. The signing of Gabriel has seen a specialist center half come into the team with everyone role having at least two players in it. Nacho Monreal has proven more than an able deputy to Kieran Gibbs, both players in a fight for who starts the North London derby next Saturday. New boy Gabriel can also play as a left back while there are a couple of boys in the youth grades whom Wenger are looking to give an opportunity to step up to the big stage.
And then, £25m? For a defender who has barely played as much football as a 19-year old Hector Bellerin, coupled with his recent injury records? It was one deal that has never been in the Wenger book. Young british prospects like Tyrone MIngs, Aaron Cresswell and Andrew Robertson have been under the club’s close watch for the past few months and it is credible to believe that one of them would be one of the main targets going into the next summer window rather than Coentrao.
