Arsenal’s chances of signing Thomas Lemar has drastically reduced after Chelsea agreed a deal with Monaco to sign Tiemoue Bakayoko, according to respected journalist Jason Burt [via Football Insider].
Monaco shocked PSG to win the French league title last season and virtually all the members of that triumphant starting xi have been linked with a move to one club or the other.
Since the end of last season, Arsenal alone have been linked with four of Monaco’s stars but it is Thomas Lemar and Kylian Mbappe who are top on Wenger’s wishlist.
However, Wenger has pressed forward with a bid for Lemar and has already seen two bids rejected for the winger.
He is reportedly confident of signing the winger with a third bid worth more than £45m but that deal looks to be in jeopardy after Monaco agreed to sell Bakayoko to Chelsea.
Burt claims the French club is only prepared to lose one of Lemar or Bakayoko this summer and with the later closing in on a move to Chelsea, the former won’t be allowed to join Arsenal.
He tweeted: “Been told again that Bakayoko to Chelsea (deal agreed) is bad news for Arsenal’s hopes of signing Lemar. Might be a bargaining stance but..”
It is going to be a big blow for Arsenal if Bakayoko’s move does have a knock-on effect on our chances of signing Lemar.
Wenger had already identified the winger as a priority target, meaning we will have to revisit our transfer plans again if we fail to sign him.
