Besides Gabriel and Bielik, Arsenal did one important last piece of business before the closure of the winter window as reports in France according to Daily Star suggest a £15m move agreed has been agreed for Morgan Schneiderlin to join Arsenal in the summer.
The Saints’ man is believed to be Wenger’s Number 1 choice for the holding role and after efforts to sign him in the summer failed, a January bid was always going to be difficult, especially as Southampton are in the battle with Arsenal for one of the Champions League places. Schneiderlin remains open to a move next summer and with it looking very likely that Arsenal could yet make the top four, there is some credibility in believing that a deal has been struck to see him make his move to the Emirates.
Wenger could afford not to make a desperate last-ditch bid to sign him this winter due to Francis Coquelin’s emergence as a dependable option and in tandem with the other players in the team available in that role, the final months of this campaign could be seen through. While Coquelin will still be persuaded to stay with the offer of a new contract, signing Schneiderlin would mark the final piece in the Arsenal team that will look to challenge for the top honours next season.
The price quoted here, though, may be too good to be true as the player in question, in a David Luiz market, is worth more than £15m. He is, in the opinions of most, a £20m-plus player and there is no reason why Arsenal would not want to pay that much for him, given that 20-year old Calum Chambers cost £16m and has even now been overtaken in the right back position by a previously unknown Hector Bellerin.
After the sulky show he put up last summer with the mass exodus of his teammates for greener pastures, Schneiderlin has shown great commitment to the Saint’s cause this season, being an integral part of Ronald Koeman’s unbelievable revitalization of what many had tagged a relegation team in the making. He does acknowledge, though, that his ambitions are quite high and even with European football at the end, he would still have a decision to make with regards to his future.
“A career passes quickly and I want to play for a big club. Today, I am at Southampton, we are second in the Premier League, it’s going well” The Frenchman said
“We’ll see at the end of the season if [a transfer] will happen. If we have qualified for the Champions League, I will make a choice”
If we are to believe the French rumours, it appears that choice has already been made and by the beginning of July, we may see him swap one red jersey for a red-and-white one.
