Arsenal attempted to sign Karim Benzema before signing Alexandre Lacazette, according to reports in Spain.
Lacazette completed a club record £52m move to Arsenal last week but reports are suggesting he wasn’t the only one on Wenger’s radar initially.
Wenger had made signing a world class striker this summer a priority and had drawn up a list of potential targets before narrowing his search down to Lacazette.
According to Diaro Gol via The Express, Wenger also considered signing Benzema as his marquee signing.
However, they say those talks ended after Arsenal made progress in its attempt to sign Lacazette.
It appears a summer transfer window will not be complete if Arsenal doesn’t get linked with Benzema. The French striker has been linked with a move to Emirates since he was at Lyon but nothing concrete has ever happened.
I doubt the authenticity of this news because Wenger apparently dropped his interest in the Madrid man since his France national team scandal which caused him to miss the 2016 European championships.
Again, Wenger wouldn’t have explored signing a 29 year old Benzema when there are other strikers out there who are better and younger.
The Spanish media are well known for lack of credibility and this is obviously one of their poorly cooked up stories again.
