Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez has revealed we tried to sign him in the summer transfer window.
The Algeria international was heavily linked with our club in the summer, Arsenal were thought to be keen on him but we were dealt a huge blow after he signed a new deal at the King Power stadium.
Mahrez was a key player for Leicester City last season, scoring 17 goals and creating 11 assists as he helped his team win the league title last season.
His performances attracted a lot of top clubs including ourselves and we were reportedly willing to pay as much as £50m for the winger. Wenger publicly declared his admiration for the winger during the course of last season and he has now confirmed that we made an attempt to sign him in the summer.
“There was contact with Arsenal,” he told Canal Football. “But Leicester wanted to keep me and I was pretty expensive. I did not want to create a conflict when the offer came in. Personally, I think it is a good thing I stayed put. It’s now up to me to prove myself again.”
Our interest in the winger shouldn’t be surprising as Wenger was keen on signing top players for the club in the summer and Mahrez was definitely one that would have improved us. However, Leicester City were reluctant to sell and rebuffed all attempts for the winger.
