Olympic Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed his club’s interest in signing Olivier Giroud as they begin their search for Alexandre Lacazette’s replacement.

Reports in France are claiming Lacazette could seal a move to Arsenal as early as this week as Wenger looks to strengthen his attacking options ahead of next season.

The impending arrival of a world class striker has now thrown Giroud’s Arsenal future into doubt and he has been linked with the likes of Everton and West Ham.

Lyon has now confirmed that they have enquired about the possibility of replacing Lacazette with Giroud this window but insists any decision on the striker’s future will be solely Wenger’s.

“There has been an approach, at some point, for Giroud,” Aulas told L’Equipe. “He is a boy that we like, who scores lots of goals and who has a lot of ambition for Russia [the 2018 World Cup].

“He told me personally that he wanted to take his time, that things were not completely defined with Arsenal, that he had a secret hope that he would be the number one striker next season.

“The key is Arsene Wenger. We are watching. We will try to very quickly sign a top European attacker.”

Wenger recently hinted that he wants Giroud to remain at the Emirates regardless of whether we sign another striker or not. The boss believes Giroud can still play a key role for Arsenal next season and would want him to stay.

Hence, if it were up to the boss, Giroud would likely remain with us next term but should the player decide to push for a move away due to next years World Cup, we might not be able to stop him.
