According to a report in the Daily Cannon, Olivier Giroud could have been sold in the summer transfer window.
The report cites Italian newspaper Calcio Mercato as its source and it claimed Giroud was on the verge of moving to the Serie A in the summer.
Giroud was linked with a move to the Serie A in the summer but Wenger poured cold water on the rumors at that time, claiming he wasn’t interested in selling the striker. Reports in Italy are now claiming that the striker could have been playing for either Napoli or Inter Milan if Wenger had his way.
We were linked with two Serie A strikers in the summer, it has now emerged that Giroud could have left us in a swap deal involving any of those targets.
Mauro Icardi was one of our top targets and we made attempts to sign him in the summer but the report has now revealed we included Giroud in a player plus cash deal for the striker but Inter rejected the offer as they had no intention of letting Icardi leave.
We also explored the possibility of signing Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli and the Italian club tried to use our interest to get Giroud. In regards to the Napoli deal, the report claims we offered a bid €50m plus the French man to sign Higuain but Napoli wanted €10m more.
The report also added that Napoli will return for Giroud in the winter transfer window but a move looks unlikely to happen as Wenger would not sanction a January sale.
We are unlikely to get a quality striker that would come in and replace the French man mid-season, hence it wouldn’t make any sense letting him leave.
