Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil is currently making waves at the Emirates for his superb performances this term. The German international is on the verge of breaking the Premier League assist record and Wenger has urged the German to continue living up to comparisons with the Gunners Legend Thierry Henry by adding more goals to his game, according to Standard Sport.
Ozil is close to breaking the assist record in a season currently held by Henry. The French man while at Arsenal made 20 assists in a season and Ozil is currently on 18, 2 short of Henry’s tally.
Ozil is also doing well in terms of goal scoring and the German has also matched his personal goal tally of a season when he scored his seventh goal this term against Manchester United on Sunday and Wenger has backed him to score more goals.
“I am pleased that Mesut Ozil is starting to score goals and get in the box now,” he said. “He didn’t do that much before, but now he starts to get into positions where he can score goals. He is a good finisher because when he gets in front of goal, he is deadly.
“His stats for assists are also very impressive. He is closing in on Thierry Henry’s record, but Mesut is a playmaker and Thierry was a striker so they are completely different positions and completely different psychological profiles as well – but they are two exceptional players.
“It’s good that Mesut follows Thierry on the assists, I want him to follow him on the goals as well!”
Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a fee of about £42m and the German is now a crucial component of the Gunners side after struggling in his first two seasons.
