Arsenal are preparing a late bid for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, according to the Daily Cannon.
Everton are looking to sell Barkley this summer but suitors have been put off by their price tag.
Tottenham Hotspur have shown the most interest in the midfielder and have held several talks with Everton over the midfielder but balked at the Toffees £50m valuation.
Arsenal are now being tipped to launch a late move for the midfielder before the transfer window closes.
Everton’s valuation slowed down the pace of negotiations with Spurs but the arrival of Gylfi Siggurdson at the Goodison Park means the Toffees will be desperate to sell Barkley, which would see his price come down.
Still that shouldn’t be enough to convince Arsenal to make a move as Wenger is only in the market for an exceptional signing.
‘We are open to an exceptional player,’ Wenger told Sky Sports, when asked about his summer plans.
‘However, just to remind you we have 33 players here and they are all good players.
‘That’s unmanageable so to bring one more player in for the sake of it would be stupid, but if we find an exceptional one, we will do it.’
Barkley doesn’t fall into the category of an exceptional player. He is a good player no doubt but he won’t improve our team in any way. So it is unlikely Arsenal would launch a late bid like the media are claiming.
