Arsene Wenger has stepped up his search for a centre back as we enter into the final week of the transfer window.
The Gunners have been working on a deal to sign Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi but it appears negotiation with the Spanish club is not progressing and Wenger has now decided to explore other options.
According to the Daily Express, Wenger considered Manchester United’s Phil Jones and made enquiries about the possibility of signing the defender but was knocked back.
Manchester United are prepared to reject any offer from Arsenal for Phil Jones as Mourinho does not want to do any business with Wenger.
Both managers dont have a good relationship and would be reluctant to do business together.
Although Wenger was successful in signing Petr Cech from Chelsea last summer when Mourinho was in charge of the Blues, it actually required intervention of the Blues owner Roman Abramovich before Cech was allowed to move to the Emirates against the wish of Mourinho.
With the club desperately in need of a defender before the transfer window closes next Tuesday, it is advisable Wenger should turn his attention to other targets because trying to convince Manchester United to allow Jones move to the Emirates would be very difficult.
The club is also believed to be keeping tabs on other targets which includes Bayer Leverkusen’s Omer Toprak and Monaco’s Marcel Tisserand.
