Arsene Wenger has revealed that he tried to sign Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante twice before his move to West London, according to a report in the Daily Cannon.
The French midfielder was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates as Wenger searched for midfield reinforcements but a move for Granit Xhaka ended reports linking the midfielder with a move to the Emirates.
Speaking to the press, the boss confirmed he was interested in the midfielder last summer and hinted that he chose a move to Stamford Bridge because of money.
When asked if he tried to sign the defensive midfielder, Wenger replied:
“Yes. When he was in France, when he was at Leicester.”
When pressed further on what happened that we couldn’t sign him, Wenger added:
“There again, we cannot explain absolutely everything, but it’s quite obvious where he has gone.”
The journalist then asked if money was the issue. Wenger replied:
“I do not want to talk more about that. Transfers are transfers, you cannot explain absolutely everything.”
Although the boss didn’t really hit the nail on the head on why we couldn’t sign Kante but it’s very obvious that this was down to financial issues.
The midfielder later joined Chelsea for £32m and currently earns about £150,000 weekly, figures which Arsenal would have been reluctant to match.
Kante has gone on to establish himself as a key component of Chelsea squad and has left Wenger and Gooners to imagine how effective we would have been had we broke our financial constraints to bring him to the Emirates.
