No other player has been quite as rumoured to join Arsenal in the winter window as Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira but it’s gone cold on that front for a while, and it’s set to probably go icy now as Jose Mourinho prepares a pre-contract to tie him up for next season, according to the Evening Standard.
Chelsea have led the way in the League this season benefitting from what was a precise and near perfect recruitment process in the summer window. Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas have been the undoubted stars of their campaign so far, and it surely does hurt to still remember we were in the reckoning for both players when they were still in Spain.
It now appears we will concede a hat-trick from the Portuguese man now as he looks set to take advantage of his former ties with the German International to take him from Madrid. Khedira was an ever-present at the Bernabeu under Mourinho but has been under the water with Ancelotti now in charge. The 27-year old was believed to be close to a move to the Emirates in August, with cracks in wage agreement reportedly the stumbling block.
He may not be a core defensive midfielder but Khedira does have the standing of a World Class midfielder who could do our midfield a world of good and it would be a blow to let him go to a Chelsea side who already boast a strong machine like Nemanja Matic. The Serbian has been the knit in their midfield and the Blues suffered in his absence against Newcastle, underlining the immense role of the defensive midfielder in a team.
Khedira was Mourinho’s coordinator in the La Liga winning team of 2012, together with Xabi Alonso, and also has been excellent for Joachim Low over the past four years alongside the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos and Philip Lahm. Though not currently valued as much at Madrid, a 27 year old Khedira would still be an absolute bargain at £15m and so to see Chelsea wrapping up an agreement which will see them get him for free will bite, sting and stink.
This, though, does not mean that it will all work out perfectly for Khedira moving to Chelsea, as their team is already quite stocked. With a midfield of Matic, Fabregas, Ramires and Mikel, Mourinho is hardly in need of another man to hold and control. Wenger, though, is in desperate need of a presence in midfield with injuries ravaging key players. The team has suffered for the lack of a strong player able to organise play from deep positions as well as keep the opposition hesitant about any plans to attack.
It is in this sense that Khedira moving to Arsenal should make more sense to the player.
