Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he will not bow to supporters’ pressure to spend heavily again this summer, insisting that a player’s worth should not be judged by his price tag, according to the Express.
The boss added that he is confident Francis Coquelin is Arsenal’s £40million anchorman. However, he does want to bring in another player to partner Coquelin in defensive midfield.
The manager cited the emergence of Francis Coquelin as an important component in Arsenal’s midfield this season to try to prove his point, and to indicate that another high-profile signing in the close season would seem unlikely.
This claim from Wenger doesn’t seem to add up to those reported by various newspapers in recent weeks, with many of the strong conviction that the Frenchman is on the lookout for marquee signings at the end of the season.
It is true that Coquelin has had a revelational season this term, but with the Gunners looking to strongly challenge rival clubs for the title next season, world class signings in some areas of the team are certainly needed.
