Arsenal have inquired about the availability of Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu, according to reports.
Wenger is currently working on signing a centre back following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista. The duo are set to miss the start of the season, leaving Koscielny as the only fit senior centre half in the squad.
The French defender is however not match fit enough as he recently returned from his summer break and Wenger has now made signing a defender his priority. The French boss has been linked with a number of targets across Europe, with Mathieu being the latest name to be linked.
French publication SFR Sport via the Express are claiming Arsenal have made an approach to sign the 32 year old.
The Barcelona defender is being linked with a move away from the club following the arrival of Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne at the Camp Nou. He made 75 appearances for the La Liga champions last season but could feature less this term due to increased competition at the club.
Arsenal are currently working on a deal to sign Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi and we are believed to have agreed personal terms with the German international. However, Wenger is still keeping his options open incase we are unable to agree a fee with Valencia and it could be possible Mathieu is being considered as an alternative target.
