Arsene Wenger is in no hurry to sign a centre back, the Daily Star has claimed.
It’s less than a week to the start of the new season and Wenger knows he is in serious need of defensive reinforcements but the boss wants to thread carefully in the market.
The club currently have no fit senior centre back available for its season opener this weekend and Wenger is under pressure to sign a centre back but the boss is refusing to panic buy as he wants a player who would truly improve the team.
Per Mertesacker suffered an injury in the club’s first pre-season game which will see him out of action until next year and Gabriel Paulista also suffered an injury in the club’s last pre-season game which could rule him out of action for about six weeks.
Wenger has been expected to make a move for Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi but the report claims the boss is not yet convinced about the 24 year old’s quality. The French man will not be rushed into making a move for the defender despite the club’s defensive crisis.
Arsenal are also being linked with West Brom’s Johnny Evans and it is understood Wenger would make a move for the former Manchester United man should he fail to agree a deal for Mustafi.
Arsenal would now face Liverpool without a senior centre back when the season begins this weekend.
