Arsenal and Manchester City are understood to be on the radar of rising English defensive star, Liam Moore according to the Mirror.
The Leciester City youngster has made a name for himself this season in Nigel Pearson’s impressive team, featuring in all 8 league games so far mainly as a right back. Moore has also been watched by Manchester City, with the Champions looking to improve on the number home-grown and English players in the squad. A regular with Gareth Southgate’s U-21s, Moore has helped Leicester’s auspicious start to the season which sees them placed at 15th place but only two points adrift Arsenal.
Following a rejected approach from Fulham for the 21 year old, Leciester quickly tied him down to the KingPower on a new three year deal which will definitely stand as an impediment to Arsenal making a move for him in the January window. Wenger is in dire need of an emergency solution to his ailing defence, with injuries sweeping through the squad like an uncontrollable flu, and Moore presents a young prospect who could turn out to be a real star of the future.
He possesses the stature of one of those strong and stout local lads who have been linked with Arsenal in the past (Micah who?) and the fact City are monitoring him may be an indication they see in him the potential that once caused raves of euphoric expectation with the man who now plays at Fiorentina. Moore is able to adapt into center half, his size giving him the advantage to spread himself like a brick mat across the defensive line. It may still be just at a monitoring stage but Moore could prove another wise recruitment of British talent to add to the growing Arsenal English core.
Wenger must be wishing he could get him by January, with the crisis he’s had to handle. While the club scouts are still to keep up with an eye on the youngster, the manager would probably turn his attention to some more established defenders around, with West Ham’s Winston Reid and Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk top on the list. The boss would have to hasten up in his pursuit of the Dutchman in particular, as Harry Redknapp appears to be looking at the 23-year old as a solution to his own weak defense.
Celtic are believed to be demanding just £8m for van Dijk and that must represent good value for Wenger, as he’ll be looking to have some more cash to spend on other targets like Chelsea’s “new Kaka” Lucas Piazon.
