Six-month Loan Deal Agreed For Arsenal’s 23-year old January Target.

AS Roma striker, Mattia Destro, won’t be going to the Emirates this window, not to White Heart Lane either, but to the San Siro, according to Daily Star.

The report suggests that Filipo Inzaghi has taken the 23-year old Italian International on loan for the rest of the season to build his team’s chances of a final push for a return to the Champions League. Destro has spent most of this season on the bench at the Stadio Olimpico and has not contributed a lot to the Giallorossi’s campaign to unseat current Scudetto holders, Juventus.

He had expressed delight at the news of interest in him from other clubs and had looked forward to still convincing Rudi Garcia to make more use of him. Roma, though, have built a core of regular players in the likes of Adam Llajic, Nainggolan and the evergreen Francesco Totti, and it did not look as though the youngster would be given so much time.

With M’bame NInag sent out on loan to Genoa and El Shaarawy unavailable due to injury, Destro can hope to have more playing time at Milan, linking up with Jeremy Menez and Keisuke Honda when he returns from Japan’s failed bid to retain their Asian Cup title.

Destro is rated as having much potential and was heavily linked with a Premier League move before the window slammed shut last summer. He is athletic and a real goal poacher but there has not been a credible success rate for Italian strikers playing away from the Serie A, especially in the Premier League, a fact no less evinced by the failure that has been Mario Balotelli’s Liverpool career until now.

There is also the case of Alessio Cerci who has been shipped out on loan to the same Milan from Atletico Madrid having just only signed in the last transfer window. Same could be said of his former Torino teammate, Ciro Immobile, who has struggled massively at Dortmund to replace Robert Lewandowski in goals and influence.

It work out well, on the evidence of the above, that Arsenal did not push for him, if ever there was a real need for him in the first place.

Three forwards have gone out on loan this season and there is still going to be competition for places amongst those who are still in the squad. It is likely that Wenger has his eyes on a top center forward for the coming summer and he would rather not rush it, nor plug that gap with Destro.
