West Ham are on the verge of signing Arsenal target Henry Onyekuru, according to Sky Sports.
Last week, the Gunners were thought to be closing in on the forward’s signature after activating his £6.8m release clause. Personal terms weren’t expected to be a problem and it was widely believed that he will be moving to the Emirates.
However, that appears not to be the case as West Ham have now jumped ahead I’m the race to sign the striker.
The player in an interview with ESPN recently revealed that he will only leave his current club for a team that can offer him regular football and that could have played a part in his decision making.
“The first and most important thing for a player is to get playing time,” Onyekuru told ESPN.
“I’m still young and I still have a long career to pursue but now I need to play.
“My agents are in talks with top clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga, French league and others. If they accept our terms, then I’ll make a decision.
“It’s not just about going to a big club and sitting on the bench. It’s not good for me, or being loaned to a club where I won’t play or where I will struggle to play.
“The money can come later but for now, I just want to play to improve, not just to play for a big club.”
Although the report didn’t mention why the player is set to choose West Ham over Arsenal, the reason isn’t far-fetched, he has an higher chance of playing regularly at West Ham than at the Emirates.
