Arsenal are still trying to sign Monaco’s Thomas Lemar but a deal currently looks unlikely as Monaco refuse to change their ‘not for sale’ stance.
Lemar is Arsenal’s top summer target and the club has seen three bids rejected already. It is believed both clubs are still in talks over a transfer but negotiations haven’t made any progress, despite the transfer window closing in a few weeks.
However, BBC journalist David Ornstein has an update on the situation, the respected journalist says Arsenal are still hopeful of signing Lemar but that hope is rapidly diminishing.
Speaking to BBC Readio 5 Live (via the Daily Cannon) , Ornstein said:
“It’s very unlikely Arsenal will sign him now.
“There is interest there but Monaco have made their stance pretty clear that he’s not for sale and it would take an incredible amount of money for Arsenal to prise him away.
“There may be one that Arsenal are possibly looking to bring in.
“I don’t think there is a specific name, but there is perhaps scope to bring in one more player.
“They’ve already spent quite heavily. Alexandre Lacazette – the record signing – and Sead Kolasinac was a free, but with their salaries that brings that spend up.
“They may look to bring a player in before the deadline but the prioritys is to shift a player out.”
Arsenal will have to turn their attention to other targets before it’s too late. Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez has been mentioned in some corners as an alternative but Wenger recently claimed he isn’t looking to sign the Algerian despite being a big fan of his.
Wenger may have to reconsider his decision not to pursue a move for Mahrez as he is apparently the only realistic target at the moment.
