He may not be a major first team player yet but 19-year old striker Chuba Akpom is the subject of interest from various clubs, both Liverpool and Tottenham enlisted by the Daily Star as being interested.
The England Under-20 star came off the bench in the FA Cup win at Brighton showing flashes of the much acclaimed brilliance of his.
Arsenal are believed to be unwilling to let him go and have offered a three year contract to keep at the Emirates beyond this season as his current deal should run out at the end of June. However, there are reports that the youngster is weighing his options and wants to be secure in the thought that he would feature more regularly before signing.
For the most part, this transfer window could be rated a success for Arsenal given that Wenger has made the additions required, helped by the return of injured team players. With all the forwards available in the team, it was possible to see a few players go out temporarily, and even some permanently.
Giroud and Welbeck are the only principal Number 9s in the Arsenal squad and unless both should be out at the same time, it may be hard to see Chuba making a start in a game. While the chances that Podolski and Campbell would return to the Arsenal team next season are slim, Yaya Sanogo will surely resume at the Emirates by the beginning of July, further compounding Chuba’s chances of a lasting Arsenal impression.
But that would not mean that Arsene would let him go. If anything, the manager’s recent moves would seem to prove he wants the youngster to be part of his plans.
Benik Afobe was having an incredible loan stint with League One side MK Dons early in the season and most gooners thought he would be recalled immediately at the end. Surprisingly, the 21-year old has been sold to Wolves and seeing that Poldi and Campbell may not return from their loan, Wenger may infact have laid the groundwork for Chuba to have more of an impact in the Arsenal team.
His 25-minute shift in the FA Cup last weekend was full of promise as his pace and ability to beat defenders bears the marks of a potential great center forward. There were some things he could have done better in that game but they should come good with more game time.
More game time is what he will probably get at Liverpool or Tottenham who will definitely use him more often as they lack variety in the striker’s position and it would be a shame to sell him to a Premier League rival where he will go and bloom into a world beater.
It must be a NO NO, right gooners?
