Sunderland vs Arsenal: Starting XI – Boss Uses Very STRONG 4-5-1 formation

Next Match: Arsenal (H)
  • Out: Borini, Buckley, Cattermole, Kirchhoff, Larsson, Mannone
  • Doubts: Denayer 25%, Januzaj 25%

Latest News: Jason Denayer and Adnan Januzaj may be in line for Sunderland returns for the visit of Arsenal. Januzaj is more likely to figure having returned to training earlier this week.

Denayer is set for the bench at best, then, with Javier Manquillo, John O’Shea, Lamine Kone and Patrick van Aanholt expected to form the back four, with Billy Jones and Papy Djilobodji alternative options.

Sunderland boss David Moyes may stick with a 4-5-1 given the level of opposition on Saturday, with Jack Rodwell, Didier Ndong and Steven Pienaar perhaps starting in central midfield, leaving Duncan Watmore, Wahbi Khazri and possibly Januzaj to compete for flank roles. Paddy McNair and Lynden Gooch offer further options.

Jermain Defoe only played 18 minutes as a substitute against Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, so he’ll return to lead the line against the Gunners.

Victor Anichebe did get 90 minutes under his belt in midweek, though, and is likely to feature off the bench for the Black Cats.

Vito Mannone (arm), Lee Cattermole (back), Jan Kirchhoff (hamstring), Sebastian Larsson (knee) and Fabio Borini (groin) are still out.
