Arsenal have been in negotiations with the representatives of Barcelona and Brazilian defender, Dani Alves, and are in line to beat Manchester Untied to his signature, according to the Metro.
Alves is in the final four months of his current deal at the Camp Nou and it is all but certain that he will be moving on to another club by July. Various clubs have been working to tie up a pre-contract agreement with him, however the South American star may likely join whoever offers the better weekly package as well as a heavyweight sign-on fee.
The report has it that “Arsenal and United have both held talks with his agent over a deal” and while United have submitted a huge pre-contract bid of £15.6m, the Gunners are ready to give him a better weekly wage, something believed to have a possible impact on him favouring a move to the Emirates.
Arsenal had been interested in Alves while he was at Sevilla as he was one of their best players in the 2007/2008 Champions League season when both clubs were in the same group. A move to Barcelona the following year saw him play a commanding role in Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering team of 2009, though he missed the Champions League Final against United due to a suspension.
He will turn 32 by the first week of May but it has not shown in his age as he still possesses world-class qualities. However, Dani is principally more akin to the offensive than doing the dirty defensive work and right back, offensive or defensive, is not exactly a place where the Gunners need replacement in the summer. Mattieu Debuchy will be on a fight to reclaim his place when he returns from injury as both Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers have shown more youthful bustle, while being good defenders as well, especially the former Barca starlet -Bellerin.
Having seen former teammate Valdes restricted to appearances with the Under-21s, Alves may not be so keen on going to United and may actually prefer a move to Arsenal who are similar in style of play to Barca but it will depend on if Wenger views him as being handy in other positions, defensive midfield for instance.
