The ever persistent and seasonal Arsenal injury crisis has come again this term; and this time, its really threatening to ruin what certainly looks like Arsenal’s best chance to win the Premier League in over 10 years.
Arsenal U-21 coach Steve Gatting has tipped Calcum Chambers to step up during Francis Coquelin’s absence through injury after the Englishman put in an excellent defensive midfield performance in the side’s clash at Brighton.
The 20 years old has seen his path into the first team’s defence blocked by the likes of Per Metesacker, Laurent Koscielny and new import Gabriel Paulista. But Coquelin’s injury means there’s space in the midfield.
Chambers used to operate in midfield during his time at Southampton and was deployed in a deep lying role during Arsenal’s Under 21 win against Brighton. With Coquelin out till until the New Year can fill in for the Frenchman after showing his capabilities during the victory.
Chambers is a very versatile player; he can play at the right hand side of the defence, as a central position and these gives Arsene Wenger options to play Chambers. Although the young English man is yet to impress the Gunners in his appearances for the first team; a role in the defensive midfield position would offer him the opportunity to show the Gaffer what he can offer to the team.
Mathieu Flamini is another alternative to Coquelin in the defensive midfield position, but the French man seems to have passed his prime and most time struggles to impose himself on oppositions; something he use to do with ease during his hay days.
