Stoke City have warned Arsenal off Jack Butland, according to reports.
Reports surfaced last week that Arsenal have made signing the goalkeeper a priority as Wenger searches for Petr Cech’s successor.
With Ospina and Szczesny expected to move on this summer, Arsenal are looking to bring in a goalkeeper who can compete with Cech next term and then become the club’s future No 1 in the nearest future.
Butland does fit the bill and at 24, he still has a lot of years ahead of him as a goalkeeper.
However, Stoke Sentinel via The Daily Star claim The Potters are not interested in selling their prize asset this summer.
The report claims Stoke City chiefs resolved in a meeting on Thursday that they won’t entertain any bid for the goalkeeper this summer.
The decision makers at Stoke feel they may not get a large fee for the goalkeeper this summer considering he spent almost the entirety of last season out injured and would prefer he comes back to his best by playing regularly next season so they can get more money from any future sale.
Their resolve to keep Butland has been strengthened by Pickford’s £30m move to Everton after just one superb first full season in the Premier League with Sunderland.
Arsenal will now have to turn to other targets or make do with Martinez as Cech’s deputy until next summer.
Martinez has been around for a long time and I think it is high time Arsenal gave him a chance to compete for the first team spot with Cech.
