Arsenal may never be able to sign Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, according to a report in the Independent.
Firmino has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season, helping his team make a brilliant start to the season and he has also shown he has the potential of developing into a top player.
However, The Football leak groups – a newspaper which has been revealing player’s contractual details, are claiming Arsenal can never sign the Brazilian from Liverpool.
The forward has an “anti-Arsenal” clause in his contract which will never allow him move to the Emirates from Anfield.
The report claims he has an £89m release clause in his contract which can be triggered by any other club in the world except Arsenal.
If I may ask, why the hate from the Reds?
Arsenal infamously tabled a £40m + £1 bid to sign Luis Suarez from Liverpool in 2013 thinking the extra £1 will trigger the Uruguayan’s release clause and that didn’t go down well with the top brasses at Anfield.
They refused to sell Suarez to Arsenal that summer and it appears Wenger’s action damaged the relationship between both clubs in terms of transfer.
It is not like both clubs have transferred a lot of players between themselves in the past but the clause in Firmino’s contract just takes the rivalry to a whole new level.
It is obvious when Liverpool were signing Firmino in 2015 as a replacement for the Uruguay striker, they had the Arsenal-Suarez bid in mind, hence the reason for the Anti-Arsenal clause.
Arsene Wenger’s frugality in the transfer market has caused him enemies within Arsenal fan base and now it has strained his relationship with one of our rival clubs.
Firmino’s current contract at Liverpool doesn’t expire until 2022.
