All around Europe there seems to have been an awakening over the past couple of weeks on transfers. With a World Cup on the horizon there’s always a rush to do business before players go off with their national teams.
It often doesn’t work that way and there will still be players taking time off from national camp to complete transfers. There’s also going to be transfers after the World Cup, but the plan is always to get things done as soon as possible.
Barcelona are one of the teams lining up targets and Matthijs de Ligt is on the list, but they won’t get it their own way. Mundo Deportivo report Bayern Munich are also interested, and three English clubs have contacted the player’s agent Barry Hulshoff.
Those are the two Manchester sides and Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger has sure picked a tough battle here.
Arsenal aren’t in the best shape they’ve seen in recent years (that’s being kind) and really don’t have a lot of arguments to convince De Ligt in comparison to the other clubs.
They wouldn’t pay ridiculous wages, over and above the others, and probably can’t show De Ligt a spending plan designed to get Arsenal back in a title race quickly.
What they can offer, perhaps, is a better chance at starting games for the 18 year old. But he’s getting that at Ajax.
A nice idea, and it would be an impressive one to pull off.
