Arsenal and Manchester United may have to work over time if they are still interested in signing German forward, Marco Reus, as reports from Spain have it that he is close to an agreement with La Liga Champions, Atletico Madrid according to Daily Star.
At least, that is the opinion of a respected Spanish journo, Juan Gato, on the whole bustle revolving around the potential destination for the BundesLiga Player of the year. Dortmund are believed to be resigned to losing him in the coming summer as negotiations for a new deal have stopped, but there is still the subject of his destination yet to be as clear.
“Atletico is the only team that has closed an agreement with Marco Reus” Juan Gato said, delving a blow to Arsenal and United, who have long held high hopes of making successful maneuvers for the coveted German.
Atletico have been very busy on the market since winning the Spanish Championship last season, and having lost a key man like Diego Costa, they were bound to pursue a few big names to ensure a sustained push on all fronts, as they did last season. Two of Arsenal’s supposed targets, Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic ended up at the Vicente Calderon this season, and Diego Simeone seems to fancy his chances of scooping a red-hot star like Reus.
Reus was one of those players who had a wretched 2014, not because they did not perform on the pitch but because injuries just won’t let them do so. A knee fracture kept him out of Germany’s successful campaign in Brazil and he has suffered many others since recovering to join Dortmund for the new Bundesliga season.
He has refused to sign a new deal to keep him there, and with Bayern not in pursuit and Barcelona banned from any transfers in 2015, it seats up nicely for someone to pounce and cart away with the pudding.
As though they were competing as much on the market as they were on the battle front of trophies, Arsenal and United have surpassed their spending records over the past 18 months in a bid to outweigh each other as far as squad strength is concerned, and it will hurt any party to lose out to the other on the 24-year old Reus. Ozil, Di Maria, Falcao and Alexis Sanchez – four genuine world class stars – have been split equally between both clubs but a lot more like Reus and Hummels still remain targeted.
From Dortmund to Atletico? It does not seem to be made by one who is approaching the height of his career. Perhaps we’ve not offered him the kind of package he wants, and I wonder why.
