Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.
The Germany international who is yet to agree a contract extension to his current Arsenal deal is attracting interests from a host of top clubs within and outside England.
Club chiefs have been in talks with the player and his representatives over a new deal but an agreement has not been reached, although some reports claim negotiations are at an advanced stage already.
Recently, the Sun published a report that Manchester United were looking to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the midfielder’s future.
They claimed the Old Trafford club are prepared to offer the midfielder a salary package worth £250,000 a week, the same amount he has reportedly demanded from Arsenal.
Bookmakers Ladbrokes [ via The Express] have now followed up the Sun’s reports by slashing the odds of Manchester United being Ozil’s next club to 5/2.
Manchester City and Chelsea are also believed to be in the race to sign the midfielder and both are placed at 10/1 to secure his services.
A Ladbrokes spokesman said: “It could be deja-vu for Gooners, with Man United sniffing around yet another of Arsene Wenger’s aces.
“The 28-year-old is just 5/2 to follow in the footsteps of Robin van Persie by leaving the Emirates for Old Trafford.”
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho had a good relationship with Ozil when they worked together at Real Madrid and the Portuguese tactician has never hidden his admiration for the midfielder.
However, I don’t see the possibility of Ozil moving to any of our rival club. There is no chance that Wenger would want to strengthen a rival club with a key player like Ozil, hence there is minimal possibility of the midfielder joining any of the three English clubs next summer even if he doesn’t sign a new deal with us.
I am confident we will get Ozil to sign a new contract with us and when he does, it will put an end to all these speculations about his future.
