Arsenal have reportedly had an £87m bid for Sporting Lisbon midfielders William Carvalho and Martins Gelson rejected.
Yesterday, reports in Portugal claimed Arsenal are preparing a combined bid for the duo. Although the initial reports quoted £70m, The Mirror via The Daily Cannon are now claiming Arsenal have had a bid £16m more than what was quoted in Portugal rejected.
Arsene Wenger is willing to spend big on some French attacking talents like Kylian Mbappe and Thomas Lemar this summer and the Portuguese press believes Arsenal are after two of their top talents as well.
Martins, 22, a winger by trade is regarded as one of Portugal’s brightest talents and was impressive for Sporting last season. He scored six goals and assisted 14 in 32 league appearances and was reportededly being lined up by Wenger to replace either of Theo Walcott and/or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Carvalho is also highly rated in Portugal and is a familiar name to Gooners. He has been linked with Arsenal over the years but nothing has ever materialized. But his name has resurfaced again with Wenger seeking a replacement for injured Santi Cazorla.
Despite both players obvious talents, I don’t think Arsenal are actually interested in them. We’ve been made to understand that Wenger’s top targets are in the French market and not the Portuguese, so the chances of this story being true is very low.
