Arsene Wenger has revealed his plans for Theo Walcott ahead of the vital clash against Liverpool this weekend and the new season in general.
Arsenal are set to take on arch rivals Liverpool this weekend in their opening match of the 2016/2017 Premier League season without centre forward Olivier Giroud who is out on holidays after his participation in the finals with France at the Euros 2016.
And with Walcott being the only senior striker at Arsenal at the moment, the bookies fancy Arsenal to win the crucial clash with Theo leading the line on Sunday against Jurgen Klopp’s Kops.
The forward had been linked with a move away from the Emirates but it appears he will remain at the club this season as he is still very much in Wenger’s plans.
The winger recently revealed his desire to play as a right winger but Wenger has backed the 27 year old to shine as a striker.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Wenger revealed Walcott’s best position is through the middle and also added that the forward wants to switch to the right wing because he had a difficult season as a striker last term.
” I believe that he has all the ingredients to be a great striker, because of the quality of his runs. He is an intelligent player, a good finisher,” Wenger told the club’s official website.
“He is not a great defender so I believe that to use his runs in the final third for us could be very efficient. After that, I think scoring goals playing there, giving him confidence to play there, will slowly convince him maybe that he can be absolutely fantastic there. On the flank, today there is much defensive work asked from the players that you lose a lot of his qualities when you put him there. For me in my head I will use him more up front.”
“You know a year ago he was more confident to play through the middle and I’m convinced that [the Man United game] changed his mind, the fact that he was not selected for the Euros was a big blow for him. Theo is intelligent, he analyses well what’s happening to him and he’s mentally very strong, and the way he practises, the way he works since the start of the season, I think I’m very positive that we can get a great season from him.”
Wenger’s statements means Walcott could lead the line for the team against Liverpool this weekend as Olivier Giroud is expected to miss the game.
