Arsene Wenger has revealed that the club tried to sign Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi a long time ago.
The Argentine forward has won five Ballon d’or award in his career already and Wenger has revealed he failed to sign the forward in the past.
The Gunners were knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona on last week leaving Manchester City the only English team in the Champions League. And when it was put to Wenger that the inability of the EPL to attract quality players and the poor quality of the English League was responsible for the the country’s poor performance in Europe, Wenger disagreed.
“I don’t accept it, believe me,” the Frenchman is quoted as saying by Squawka. “But I must say on the other hand as well, Messi is Messi. Neymar is Neymar. They play in Barcelona. Did we miss them? Yes. But we tried to get Messi, we couldn’t.
Arsenal successfully signed Messi’s close pal Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona in 2003 and the Spanish midfielder went on to become a cult hero at the club before he returned back to the Catalan club.
Wenger have missed out on a number of top players like Lukaku, Hazard and Ibrahimovic for one reason or the other but Messi’s would go down as the most painful.
