Arsene Wenger has revealed he would do whatever needs to be done to keep Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the club, according to a report in ESPN.
Chamberlain’s future has been up in the air since the end of last season. He was linked with a move to other clubs in the summer, having struggled to nail down a spot in our starting xi over the years but somehow managed to stay with us.
The winger also revealed on Sunday that he would reconsider his future at the end of this season should he not get enough playing time this year but Wenger says he would fight to keep the midfielder at the club.
Wenger says he wants the former Southampton man to remain with us for a long time and suggested he would get the chance to impress during the course of the season.
“I can understand, yes.
“On the other hand, when you buy a young player at 17 years of age and you spend a lot of money, you would like him to stay at the club.
“I think his place is here. We like him, I personally rate him as a player and I hope that he will show that he can have a stable position in the team until the end of the season.”
Wenger also compared Chamberlain to Theo Walcott who has become a top player for us having struggled last season like Chamberlain.
“He is similar to Walcott this season. He has not been rewarded yet, but he is in a similar position because he has worked really hard,” he added.
Wenger’s recent comments are contrary to reports that have been circulating in the last few weeks. It was claimed that Wenger had given up on the midfielder, with some reports even claiming this season is his last chance to impress the boss but Wenger’s recent comments shows he still has faith in the winger which should be a huge boost for him.
