Arsene Wenger has backed Olivier Giroud to play a key role in the team’s title challenge this season.
The French international is yet to start a league game this season due to injury but Wenger has backed him to come back stronger.
Giroud has shown he has the quality to play at the top level but what has been frustrating about the striker is that his good performances come in patches. Due to these inconsistent performances, he is loved and loathed in equal measure by fans but Wenger has backed him to win over his critics when he returns from injury.
“I am an admirer of Giroud because he has gone through some tough times and he bounces back,” Wenger said, as quoted by the Guardian . “When his back is to the wall, he has an answer every time. When I go into a big game, you always think: ‘I can rely on him.’ You know that when the competition starts, he will be with you.”
“Before the competition, the supporters didn’t want him. But he turned them around. That’s one of the strengths of Olivier. He is mentally very strong. The criticism does knock him. He’s not made of metal. He’s sensitive but sensitive and strong.
“Everybody wants to be loved. I’ve never seen anyone who dreams to be hated. But it is dealing with the fact that it doesn’t always go your way that makes a man,” he added.
One can say the striker has been a little unfortunate this season as he returned late from preseason. He was given an extended break after he helped the France national team reach the final of the Euro 2016 championship and prior to his return, Sanchez was drafted in to fill his position and the Chilean did well in his absence.
Giroud will face a battle to reclaim the first team spot when he returns from injury. Wenger is backing him to find a way back into the team, we will have to wait to see if the French striker will be able to prove the manager right, we are really hoping he does.
