Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has encouraged new signing Mohamamed Elneny to become more physical in order to cope with the demands of English football.
Following injuries to several members of his midfield, the gaffer moved to recruit the versatile 23-year-old from FC Basel for a modest fee of around £5million.
The Egyptian international who represents Wenger’s sole major acquisition in the just concluded January transfer window was handed his Arsenal debut in the 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round victory over Burnley on Saturday.
The midfielder completed the full 90 minutes for the Gunners and pleased his boss with his overall contribution but the Frenchman pointed the physical aspect of his game as an area he feels Elneny should improve on.
“I felt he started a bit cautious and played a bit secure,” said Wenger of his latest recruit.
“But he became more adventurous, had some good shots on goal, and his mobility and his workrate was exceptional.
“He needs to adjust to the power of the game in the Premier League, but this was a good welcome today and certainly he has learned a lot.
“It will take him some time to adjust to the power side of our game here but his intelligence, mobility and the technical level are good.”
