Arsenal are hopeful of signing AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas next summer, according to reports.

We were reportedly very close to signing him in 2014 from Olympiakos before Roma swooped for his services; and we have been continually linked with his services since then.

The 25 year old was also linked with us in the just concluded summer transfer window but a move failed to materialize. We then signed Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia who has proven to be our best signing of the window.

However, reports claim we are still interested in Manolas. This is coming after reports in Italy emerged that the player rejected a new contract offer from AS Roma.

Spanish newspaper Sport via The Metro are claiming we are still very much in the race to sign Manolas despite signing Mustafi in the summer transfer window.

The report claims we see Manolas as a replacement for Per Mertesacker who could leave the club at the end of the season.

If true then one would need to ask why the club can’t trust any of our youngsters like Rob Holding or Calum Chambers to replace the German considering the fact that Mustafi-Koscielny partnership looks like one that will last beyond this campaign and we have Gabriel Paulista to deputize for either of the duo if need be.

We reportedly had a £37.5m bid rejected for Manolas in the summer transfer window and if Roma were to sell next summer, he would cost more than the rejected fee.

We will have to wait until next summer to know whether we are really interested in signing Manolas but I don’t expect us to spend huge sum of money on a new centre back when we have promising players like Holding waiting on the wings.
