Premier League clubs line up to land Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez.
Arsene Wenger is preparing another plus-one-pound bid for a Suarez, according to reports.
The Atletico Madrid midfielder, Mario Suarez Mata, has failed to hold down a constant berth at the Calderon under Diego Simeone, prompting the attention of a long list of clubs including Manchester United and Arsenal, indicating interest in taking him.
Manchester United and Arsenal are thought to be the most pursuing of the English pack, with Arsene Wenger and Louis van Gaal in need of players who can operate in the defensive midfield role to provide sufficient cover for the back four. The search for a capable personnel have seen both clubs linked to just about every recognizable player of such standing in the market, available or not, ranging from Sami Kheidira, to William Carvalho, Morgan Schneiderlin, Kevin Strootman and Arturo Vidal.
And now, Suarez.
The 27 year-old, who has won two caps for the Spanish National team, is believed to be open to a move away from Madrid in the winter, and though Roma have pressed more buttons, the lure of the Premier League is expected to prove too good for him to resist.
Given his qualities, it could be the kind of player Wenger would really want to push for.
The manager has recognized the deficiency in his team defensively and while he admits the clear need to add an extra defender in January, he is also expected to make an attempt to bring in someone with more defensive abilities to play the holding role in front of the back four. As much as he tried to defend Mattiue Flamini on the incident with Hull City’s Mo’ Diame, you get the feeling that upon second review, the manager would link the event with Flamini’s reaction in the run-up to Sergio Aguero’s goal in the 2 -2 draw with City last month.
Wenger is expected to receive a £20 million transfer purse to use in the winter and after spending on any one defender, some balance could still be available to transact a transfer for a player in some other position where much reinforcement is needed. Suarez will come in cheap at about £10 million given the immensity of his experience at the top level with Atlectico over the years. He’s been with the club right from his teenage years, except some brief loan spells and two years out at Real Mallorca. He’s been part of the teams who have won the Europa League, two UEFA Super Cups, winning the La Liga as well as reaching the Champions League Final last year.
Should Wenger go head to head with LVG for the signature of Suarez in January?
