Arsene Wenger has revealed he must sell before he can buy any more player this summer.
Following Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Stoke City, the media were quick to hit the panic button, with a journalist asking the boss in his post match press conference if he would be forced back into the transfer market but Wenger ruled out signing a new player for now.
Though, the boss hasn’t ruled out more arrivals before the transfer window, he is currently focused on clearing the deadwoods.
The squad is so large but most of the players taking up important spaces in the squad and wage bill isn’t in the manager’s plans anymore and he is determined to move them out before making any new signing.
“I expect to sell players first,” he said. “We have too many players. It is not manageable. Many clubs are in this situation – that is why the transfer market is quiet. We have 33 players at the moment. We have too many players.”
At the end of last season, Wenger stated he was going to make three signings this summer. With Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac the only arrivals so far, there is still space for one more signing.
However, difficulty in selling the unwanted players means the club has now exceeded the maximum number of players it can keep and would have to sell at least eight players before the transfer window closes.
