According to the Daily Star, Arsenal will make an attempt to agree a cut-price deal for Winston Reid within the next few weeks, a £3 million bid being mooted as the possible offer.
Reid is in the final six months of his contract at Upton Park and with Big Sam confirming the player has “no future” at that part of London beyond this season, it is possible they may want to cash in on him this month.
Arsene Wenger needs an extra defender to keep his team strong at the back going through the second phase of this campaign and a £60,000-a-week package for four years should be enough to sway the 26-year old to North London.
It’s becoming a sickening situation with the Arsenal defence. When we can rejoice at one time that we are having players back, another injury hits and worse still, same player. It points down to one thing and that is that it is now a MUST that we get defensive additions in this month.
Arsenal done some good business with West Ham this season with Carl Jenkinson developing himself into a very solid defender at Upton Park. Perhaps they may want to involve a permanent Jenko move in the deal but that would mean over-pricing a player, Reid, who will be a free agent in no distant time.
Reid has been one of the pillars behind West Ham’s consistently positive performances this season. He has racked up over a century of Premier League caps for West Ham since his debut in 2010 and certainly knows what the League is all about. Having followed the hammers to the Championship following their relegation in 2011, Reid played his part to see that they came straight back to the top flight at the first time of asking and as such, has the experience of the varying dynamics of English Football.
After the cataclysm at the St. Mary’s on New Year’s day, Mertesacker and Koscielny have played positive roles in our recent games, not just defending but getting on the score sheet as well. However, they are in need of competition from younger players and while Calum Chambers has made quite a bright start, a more established player is definitely needed to keep both seniors on their toes. Reid is just a mix of the perfect age and experience to provide what we need, and he is a threat on set-pieces too.
Debuchy was one of the make-shift center-half options available to Wenger when we did not have Koscielny and without Gibbs at the moment, Monreal will not be available as a center-half either, making it very compulsory that we buy this January – like it has not always been.
