Arsene Wenger has reiterated he wants to keep Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain longer than his current contract, following the winger’s fine form in recent weeks.
Chamberlain has been in and out of the starting xi this season but the England international appears to have forced his way into Wenger’s plan this season.
Wenger was asked about the winger’s long-term future last week and the boss revealed talks with the player to extend his contract is ongoing but the Mirror sport revealed yesterday that the club is yet to contact the player as regards extending his contract.
And Wenger has now responded swiftly by reiterating that he wants the midfielder – who has 18 months left in his current deal- to stay at the Emirates beyond his current contract.
“We want him to stay at the club,” he said, as quoted by The Express.
“I bought him at a very young age and think he is developing well.
“This season he is making steps and moving forward. We have invested so much time and work in the player.
“He is integrating the qualities we want him to have and we want him to stay.”
The winger has started eight of Arsenal’s 17 Premier League games this season and will be hoping to start more games in the course of the season.
Wenger’s desire to keep the midfielder should serve as a confidence booster for him at this crucial stage of his career and it now depends on him to continue to repay the manager’s faith with his work on the pitch.
Hopefully, he will be able to do that by playing a key role in our bid to win the Premier League title this season.
