Arsene Wenger insists he was never tempted to sell Theo Walcott in the summer transfer window.
There were several reports in the summer linking the winger with a move away to West Ham, with some claiming Wenger had lost faith in him.
Although he happened to stay with us, Wenger has now claimed he never thought of selling the winger despite his poor campaign last season.
Walcott is now an important member of our team, scoring crucial goals for us this season and when the manager was asked if he wanted to sell the winger in the summer transfer window, he replied:
“Look I didn’t speak to anybody because I was not ready to let him go – I always wanted to keep him.”
The winger’s form has taken many by surprise, even his critcs are beginning to get on his side. He has already scored five goals which is the same number he scored last season and Wenger who has been impressed with Walcott so far believes playing with less pressure is helping the midfielder live up to expectations.
“He lets the passion for the game come out of his body and that is what you want from him,” the Frenchman told a media conference ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Ludogorets on Wednesday.
“When he plays with more freedom, he lets his thoughts come out and plays with more desire because he is a less restricted player.”
Walcott is a proof that things change quickly in football, if it wasn’t for the manager’s patience, the winger would have been doing well somewhere else.
Many believe the signing of Shkodran Mustafi was our best piece of business in the summer transfer window but Wenger’s decision to keep the winger in the summer should be rated on par with the manager’s decision to sign Shkodran Mustafi.
It is of popular belief that the title race starts in the summer transfer window and one can say we placed ourselves in a good position with our summer transfer dealings which includes keeping Walcott.
