Arsene Wenger has vowed not to change his approach in the transfer market despite fans call for the manager to be less frugal in signing players.
The manager has been criticized for his unwillingness to pay exorbitant transfer fees for players but he has now revealed he isn’t prepared to change his approach, claiming he will continue spending the club’s money as if it were his own.
“I personally believe the only way to be a manager is to spend the club’s money as if it were your own because if you don’t do that you’re susceptible to too many mistakes,” Wenger said.
“You make big decisions and I believe you have to act like it’s your own money, like you’re the owner of the club and you can identify completely with the club. Because if you don’t do that I think you cannot go far.”
Despite Wenger’s unwillingness to pay over the odds for targets, he has been able to keep his star players in recent years and also attract top class players like Sanchez, Ozil and Cech, as opposed to the period when the club kept losing its star players to rival club’s. The boss revealed the move from Highbury to the Emirates had a huge impact in the club’s financial abilities.
“We had to pay back the debt. We knew we had limited money and we had to be in the Champions League to have a chance to pay off the debt.
“That was the most difficult period for me. For a while it was very bad, but today the club are financially safe.”
Wenger has already shelled out upwards of £30m for the services of Granit Xhaka this summer and is trying to sign an experienced centre back and a striker before the end of the transfer window.
