Arsene Wenger has reportedly identified Kalidou Koulibaly as a target for Arsenal.
Napoli’s star centre-half is highly rated in Italy, having attracted attention from Chelsea in the past.
Arsenal’s Premier League and London rivals pursued the 26-year-old last summer when Antonio Conte arrived at Stamford Bridge.
But the Blues failed to convince Napoli into selling as Koulibaly eventually signed a new contract, which runs until 2021.
Arsenal, though, seem to be checking on the defender’s availability ahead of the new season.
The Gunners have already added left-back Sead Kolasinac to their backline on a free transfer from Schalke.
But with Laurent Koscielny turning 32 in September and Per Mertesacker retiring next summer, a central defender is on the club’s agenda.
And according the Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Arsenal have enquired with Koulibaly’s entourage about a move.
They have apparently done so at the request of Arsene Wenger. And Arsenal are not the only English side to have shown interest.
It is said various suitors from the Premier League have come forward to try and sign Senegal international Koulibaly.
Arsenal’s pursuit, though, is likely to be in vain.
TuttoMercatoWeb add the Gunners face being stopped in their path by Napoli.
Manager Maurizio Sarri considers Koulibaly a fundamental part of his team and will not let him leave.
Arsenal are still active in the transfer market with winger Thomas Lemar a key target, despite Monaco’s reluctance to sell.
Should they want to add a centre-half too this summer to accompany new signing Alexandre Lacazette at the Emirates, Arsenal may have to look elsewhere.
